What to Pack

Whether you choose to cruise the Amazon River on an oceangoing cruise ship or an expedition-style vessel, being comfortable is a top priority.

On oceangoing ships, casual wear is the standard daytime attire. It's best to bring a variety of footwear choices including low-heeled shoes for walking on deck and a pair of dress shoes. Many cruise lines include a couple of formal dinners, so check with your cruise counselor for details on appropriate attire. On expedition-style vessels, attire is always casual.

You'll also want to think about the kind of shore excursions you want to participate in. Visits to Amazon River ports and small local villages are usually offered, as are zodiac excursions and rainforest treks. The weather is hot, humid and frequently rainy so no matter which excursion you select you will need light cotton clothing, a light-weight raincoat, rain pants, good walking shoes and bug spray.

Remember to pack all of your medications, prescription or otherwise, in a bag you can carry onto your flights. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are also necessities on the Amazon River.
